Client Comments:

I am a Chemist by training, a civil servant by profession and a cynic by nature.  I don’t do fads or trends or Zen/Qi Gong/yoga etc but I am now a fan of the Alexander Technique (AT).  I came to it a bit reluctantly via a  workshop, which made me buy Alexander’s book to find out more about it. I liked the concept of getting inside my own decision-making loop to have a chance to pause before I did something I’d regret, so I decided to find a teacher to help me. I’m not sure quite what I expected.  I admit to being puzzled for the first couple of sessions how the simple act of moving from sitting to standing and back could help in any way, let alone why lying down for 15 minutes doing nothing but spreading like a beached jellyfish could equip me for a stressful day. But I am now sold.

AT is now my superpowerIt’s my way of diffusing stress, of being energised and of using my body in a way that will help me look after it for the long term. I guess it is a combination of mindfulness and ergonomics but, whatever labels you put on it, AT is helping me through a very stressful period. I find it clears my head and improves my actions when I check in with my body to see if it is looking after itself.  It takes a lot of concentration to follow the movements your body would be doing without your involvement so I can see that you would ask ‘why bother?’ but when your back is beautifully stacked, your head feels weightless on the top and you are relaxed but ready to move in any direction should you decide to, that is a gloriously serene moment and, once experienced, you’ll want to capture it again. It’s that ‘should you decide to’ that is key for me. Being ready to move, sing, shout, swear, throw things but not yet committed to doing any, or none, of the options gives you a micro breathing space to think about how you’d like to proceed – can I get up without wrenching my back? Can I reach that thing safely? Can I relax into the high notes that I will be singing? Can I give useful feedback without being subjective? Can I deal with a situation without seeing another’s behaviour as a personal affront? But most of all, how can I stay feeling like this as I move through my day? And, occasionally, I can take that poised feeling into the next thing I do and the weightlessness feels like flying.

You can’t think about this all the time, of course not, too much is happening all day every day but just remembering to check in occasionally gives you a physical and mental breather. Noticing tension and letting it go, thinking of a more comfortable way to sit, opening my chest as I walk up a hill, not flying off the handle when I’m challenged, each of those moments incrementally makes me calmer and better able to deal with each day.

A P.S. paragraph prompted by today’s session.  The calm and slight distance than an AT period brings allows me to acknowledge what I am feeling.  It doesn’t mean I confront it or tackle it or dwell on it but it is a chance to take a peek at what is usually bottled up and register that it is influencing me in more ways than I am usually prepared to admit. JB.

ABOUT THE TECHNIQUE

TAKE A STEP…

-GO BEYOND THE HABITS OF A LIFETIME-

At the core of the Alexander Technique is a simple reality; muscular and movement habits that are often the root cause of back, neck and shoulder pain, physical and mental tensions or an unnatural postural profile, can be changed.

‘We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence therefore is not an action, but a habit.’

Aristotle.

Using a holistic approach involving both mind and body, Caroline will show you how to change your habits and restore your health and wellbeing, so you can get on with the things you really want to do.

What one client discovered:

I found an instant benefit regarding the discomfort in my back. I also learned how to relax my body properly which has been very beneficial for ongoing health management and avoiding future problems. I found the experience  nothing short of miraculous”. ME (June 2019)

HABITS ARE LIKE KNOTS –
THEY ARE EASY TO CREATE BUT MORE TRICKY TO UNRAVEL

Through a programme of classes involving simple, practical experiences and topic discussions, Caroline will guide you through the process of learning how to untie the existing knots and prevent new ones from developing.

Once you start applying the principles you have learnt to your everyday life, the ripple effect will make everything you do more focused, enjoyable, and effective.

There is nothing nature loves more than to alter what exists and make new things like it.
